Although the NFL is currently experiencing a lockout it doesn’t mean that the NFL teams have shut their doors entirely; especially when it comes to their fans. With the catastrophic storms that ripped through the Southeast United States recently, families have found themselves left with almost nothing in some cases. The Indianapolis Colts teamed up with The Salvation Army, as well as WISH-TV, in order to create the Hoosiers Sending Help South campaign.
Hoosiers Sending Help South was created to help bring the attention to Hoosiers regarding what was happening to their neighbours in the Southeastern part of the United States. The four day event which took place between May 5th to 8th, had people from all over Indiana bringing in food, water, shelter, and other essentials to help support the tornado victims who lost their homes during the destructive storms.
Colts Owner and CEO Jim Irsay kicked off the drive by making a $5,000 donation of his own. Individuals were able to continue in his footsteps and make a $10 donation of their own by texting “GIVE” to 80888 or they were able to head online to The Salvation Army website to donate their own amount of money that they felt was necessary. All the money that was raised from the Hoosiers Sending Help South campaign went to those families who needed the donations the most as The Salvation Army provided them with food, water, shelter and other essentials.
“This four day campaign showed the spirit of caring that makes Hoosiers so special. We want to thank our partners at WISH-TV and The Salvation Army for joining hands and making a difference through our Hoosiers Sending Help South initiative,” said Colts Owner and CEO Jim Irsay in a statement.
The four-day campaign was able to raise a grand total of $23,175 for the families who had their homes and lives destroyed by the
disastrous storms that hit the Southeast United States. It has taught us that as a community we need to work together to help each other out. We are all living in this world together and are all human beings so we should have no reason to turn our backs on someone else who is in need of it.
