In support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign, Let’s Move in School is a national initiative looking to increase physical activity before, during, and after school. The new campaign was the cause for celebration, as the opening showcase took place Friday, April 1, 2011. The event was hosted by the San Diego Padres and led by Drew Brees, Annika Sorenstam, Tracy Austin and Carl Lewis, with hundreds of local students and adults at PETCO Park.
The showcase modeled what schools can do to incorporate physical activity into everyday learning and increase the amount of physical activity students get at all points of the school day.
Following the physical education showcase, sports stars, led by New Orleans Saints quarterback and the 2009 Super Bowl Champion Drew Brees, took the stage continuing to model the steps schools can take to keep students pro active in physical activity. The Pad Squad and Swinging Friar, joined by Dr. Toni Yanecy, later demonstrated an Instant Recess baseball activity as an example of classroom routines that improve attention and behavior. American Track and Field legend Carl Lewis closed out the event by leading an after school game designed to build running, throwing and jumping skills.
The growth of physical awareness in North America is beneficial not only for children in school but for parents and teachers around them.
