NBA star and Orlando Magic guard Jameer Nelson and other NBA All- Stars have teamed up with After-School All-Stars, to turn their on court accomplishments into a reality for inner city kids through the Hoop Heroes program. Launched during the 2009-10 season, Hoop Heroes is a partnership bringing together players, corporate sponsors and After-School All- Stars to raise money and awareness for after school programs and raised nearly $113,000 with the help of corporate sponsors last season.
As a part of the Hoop Heroes program, athletes have been making various donations throughout this season based on the stat of their choice ($10 per point, $20 per assist, $20 per rebound or $100 per win), each with a minimum commitment of $5,000. LeBron James, Chris Paul, Chris Bosh, Brandon Bass, Thaddeus Young and Devin Harris have all joined the program.
After-School All-Stars provides a safe educational place for underserved, middle school children to go to after school. Through donations the All-Stars provide engaging and educational activities to nearly 80,000 kids annually. By incorporating academic support, enrichment, and physical fitness, the program is designed to improve participant’s lives.
“Growing up in Chester, PA, I can relate to the backgrounds of many After-School All-Stars’ participants,” Jameer Nelson told After-School All- Stars. “Now that I’m in a position to give back to the community, I feel it’s very important for me to do so.”
