NFL cornerback Tarell Brown has been able to make a name for himself in the league over the last four years. He made the leap during the 2011 season when he started every game for the San Francisco 49ers, and did the same thing the following season. But during that span he did something even bigger, he started the Brown’s Kids Foundation.
On Saturday, June 27, 2015, Brown and the Brown’s Kids Foundation will be hosting the 8th Annual Free Football and Cheerleading Skills Camp at E H Hanby Stadium in Mesquite, Texas. The camp is open to the first 400 campers grades 2nd – 12th and runs from 10 AM – 1 PM.
“I felt that the camp was needed and necessary in the community,” said Brown. “It’s something that I had the opportunity to do and something that I still enjoy doing.”
“You can’t forget about the young ladies and the little girls, you want to help out to leave a lasting impression on them and I felt that it’s something that is needed. A lot of guys just have football camps but they don’t include the cheerleading,” explained Brown when asked about the cheerleading aspect of the camp.
Each camper receives a free camp T-shirt, camp souvenir, autographed player card and lunch. They also get the chance to interact with Brown and other NFL players, as well as go through position-specific drills, special teams participation, competitive 1-on-1 drills, and team offensive vs. defensive scrimmages. However, football is more than just a game, as participants are also instructed on proper warm-up and stretching techniques, conditioning and sports nutrition. North Mesquite Cheerleaders and current Stallion coaches will instruct the cheerleader participants, who will showcase what they learned for the crowd at the end of the day.
“It’s more of a blessing and an opportunity for me to interact with them than vice versa. I get more joy out of it than I think they realize and that they even might get out of it,” said the Mesquite native.
He created the Brown’s Kids Foundation back in 2012 as a way to help give back to the community and to showcase positive reinforcement that athletics and mentoring can give. Throughout the year he hosts other events through his foundation, including a back-to-school rally in August in partnership with the Mesquite Friendship Baptist Church. Through this he is able to donate school supplies and money to local youth for the upcoming school year.
The veteran cornerback understands what it takes to rise to success, and he wants to make sure that the youth he interacts with know they are all capable of doing the same thing.
“Dreams do really come true if you really put forth the effort and the time into something that you really want. You can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. I’m a living witness to that and I tell kids that day in and day out, you know.”
