Tyler Seguin has really started to change the way people think about him. Coming off his best NHL campaign and first season as a member of the Dallas Stars, Seguin’s workload has not only increased on the ice, it’s increased off of it as well. Working with The Fourth Period and Third Party Entertainment, Seguin hosted The Fourth Period’s 6th Annual Charity Golf Classic at Nobleton Lakes Golf Club in support of the Derrek Moseychuk Fund.
“It’s the first time that I’m doing this. The Fourth Period and Third Party Entertainment did a good job putting this together and kind of letting me take over a little bit,” said the Brampton, Ontario native.
“Obviously a lot of people know I have this foundation in Dallas called Seguin’s Stars which I started to help get kids to come to the games, but today’s a little bit more special for me because it’s for my buddy Derrek who went through a terrible accident. Little things go a long way and today’s a great day and it’s a pretty good turnout so far.”
On December 28th, 2012, Derrek was in a motor vehicle accident. He was the passenger in a car that skid on black ice, spun out of control and rolled over. Three of his friends walked away without serious injuries, while his life changed forever. He broke his neck and became a quadriplegic.
Last season Seguin partnered with the Southwest Wheelchair Athletic Association to lease a suite for each Stars home game throughout the season. The suite was donated to children who suffered spinal cord injuries. On top of all that, he also participated in a meet-and-greet after the game with those who attended on his behalf.
“There were so many more opportunities in Boston, so now in Dallas I’m doing a little bit more personal stuff than you can say I was doing when I was in Boston,” explained Seguin.
“There were plans in Boston for me to do more stuff in the near future, but obviously that didn’t pan out, so I’m doing a little bit more in Dallas which is why you’re hearing about it a bit more as well.”
Other players got involved to help Seguin’s cause including Wayne Simmonds, Michael Del Zotto, Gregory Campbell, Devante Smith-Pelly, Jesse Blacker, Rich Peverley and many others.
Peverley, who is motivated to return to the NHL to play again, was happy to help a guy he’s been around since his days as a rookie with the Bruins.
“It’s for a great cause. I’m happy to help out Tyler any way that I can,” said Peverley. “We’ve been together for four years so it’s really great to be here.”
One guy that Seguin really gelled with once he arrived in Dallas is Jamie Benn. Not only have they become a dynamic duo on the ice, they’ve become pretty close off of it. Close enough that their foundations will team up next season.
“There’s a pretty big event coming up in Dallas, we’re doing a big sled hockey game. One of Jamie’s foundations and my foundation are coming together to organize it. It’s a lot of paraplegic and quadriplegic and it’s going to be a really big sled hockey game so I’m looking forward to working with them.”
