While preparing for the Masters is a grueling task itself, the experience of participating as a caddy for one of PGA’s Canadian stars is worth the price of admission – an admission worth $40,000 to be exact.
That is the amount being donated to the Mike Weir Foundation by Paul Atkinson, a Toronto native who earned the opportunity after being a guest at the Mike Weir Charity Classic earlier this year, and some convincing from Weir’s brother Jim, who is an acquaintance of Atkinson.
According to Globe and Mail, Weir allowed his fellow caddy to stay at his house in Augusta, Georgia, a house which Weir rents for all his family members and supporters who attend the annual event.
“It’s unique and different and it’s for a cause,” Atkinson told the Globe and Mail.
The Par Three Contest, which Weir and Atkinson participated in, is a chance for members of the PGA to allow those who are less fortunate to experience the Masters. It is a common theme for friends and family to caddy for PGA players, including Weir’s daughters Elle and Lily, but it was Weir’s decision to have it bid upon for his charity. A bid, two years ago, that was set at the price of $100,000.
It just goes to show that at a prestigious tournament such as the Masters, the winning prize for the golfers doesn’t always hold the value of a green jacket.
