During the course of the 2010- 2011 NBA season the New Orleans Hornets have been working in partnership with Chevron, Rouses Supermarkets, CVS Pharmacies and Take 5 Oil Change to create the Believe in Blue campaign. Believe in Blue was geared to raising money and awareness for the residents of the communities who were affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last summer.
The Hornets raised $100,000 throughout the campaign in benefit to the Friends of the Fisherman Fund, America’s WETLAND Foundation and Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans. Efforts through money raised will help restore local coastal wetlands and help return the gulf’s water back to its original colour-blue. Chevron has committed to match the $100,000 raised by the Hornets, making the total donation $200,000 for the recovery and revitalization of the Gulf Coast.
New Orleans’ sports franchises have played major roles in recent years in the rebuilding and support for their community which has seen its share of disaster. Through acts of charity and care such as this latest campaign, the public has shown how important a sports franchise can be to a community and what they can do to help in times of need.
