The Seattle Mariners are joining Japan Relief efforts by dedicating their six-game opening home stand of the 2011 season. The team will make a donation to the Red Cross matching all Mariners front office employees and fan contributions, with a guaranteed $10,000 donation through Mariners Care.
Nintendo of America Inc., majority owners of the Mariners, will match donations from its employees to the Red Cross or Americares.
From opening day on April 8, 2011, until the conclusion of the home stand, April 13, volunteers from the Red Cross will be collecting donations outside the gates of Safeco Field. Donations will also be collected during the game at numerous locations inside Safeco Field.
The Mariners will be working with the Red Cross throughout this baseball season to collect donations during future selected dates, including Salute to Japan Night. Silent Auctions will also take place April 9, 2011, with signed Mariners memorabilia from team members with all proceeds going to the Red Cross.
Through acts of charity and care such as this, we are reminded of the impact the sports world has when it comes to bringing a community together, whether it be in North America or overseas.
