National Hockey League Hall of Famer Pat LaFontaine and his Companions in Courage Foundation have unveiled plans to construct a unique and advanced “NHL Legacy Classroom” at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. The Legacy Classroom will be in commemoration of this year’s Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic held at Heinz Field between the Penguins and Washington Capitals.
The Legacy Classroom, which is expected to be under construction by April 2011, will be an interactive space allowing children to connect with friends, family and classmates through innovative communications tools.
The classroom will allow easy add-on technology components that focus on education by including a SMART board and table. These tools will enable students and teachers to connect with other schools or “classrooms” via the room’s video conferencing abilities. This will give students a chance to stimulate collaboration amongst their peers.
The NHL Legacy Classroom will also include a big screen TV that will utilize Cisco System’s state of the art video conferencing capabilities. Through this, patients will be able to connect with their classrooms during school hours and collaborate with other students and take part in interactive games and other after school activities.
“I am extremely grateful to the NHL for its generosity and consideration of the children of Pittsburgh,” LaFontaine told NHL.com. “I can think of no better way to commemorate the NHL Winter Classic than by this long-lasting gift to the host community in Pittsburgh.”
The donation of the NHL Foundation’s NHL Legacy Classroom is part of the NHL’s Biggest Assist happens off the Ice Initiative – the League’s ever-lasting tradition of realizing important social issues around the world.
