When somebody can turn an entire organization around, they automatically become a fan favourite without any doubts. When you lose your favourite player and the face of your organization to a retirement or trade, it always hurts, but to lose your favourite player because of a health issue, it’s just scary.
Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson was the face of the Los Angeles Lakers throughout the 1980’s and he helped bring many championships to a city that was in desperate need at the time. He was always watched throughout high school, not just because of his talent but because him and Larry Bird went back and forth as to whom the best player coming out of college was. He brought five NBA titles to the city of Los Angeles and was on top of the world, but it all came to a stop when he retired from the game that he loved in 1992 because he had contracted HIV.
Since his retirement, Magic Johnson has created The Magic Johnson Foundation, which he has been a motivational speaker for, as well as an advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention and safe sex. He no longer focuses on just the awareness of HIV/AIDS because he wants to concur other charitable goals.
To date, The Magic Johnson Foundation has raised more than $20 million for charity, including $8 million raised solely by the Foundation for grants awarded to non-profit organizations and $12 million for other charities raised through partnership and special events.
